David Keler - Ep Release

Hello everyone.

This blog is about my relationship with music and sound, so there will be some articles about artists I like, and here's one !

I am not directly involved in this EP Release, I didn't participate in the recording. David played everything on his EP.

17/10/07 - La comédia
However, I know David for 7 years now. He wrote songs for a singer I played with. When David finally decided to sing his own songs, he contacted me to be a member of his live musicians. We did a great series of concerts at the Comedia, Sentier des Halles, the Scene Bastille, along with JP Motte on the drums and André Margail on guitars. These concerts are still great memories!

I then played again with David and his cousin in Scarlet Pearls and during the concert for the Visitor from the Future, where I was really happy to have David playing the bass.
We will soon be back on stage together with André Margail to accompany the singer Clara Néville produced by 75Music, David's own music label.

It is not a coincidence that we spend our time to play together in various projects, he is one of the talented artists that I greatly appreciate. His music and lyrics are always well written and playing with David is always a great time.
So I let you go listen and buy the EP. You should follow David, as he's going to have some great projects in the weeks and months to come.

Bye !

The album - Episode 3 - The commercial failure

Hello everyone!

What a nice title for a really optimistic article...

Let's think for real, my album will not be a commercial success.

First, because it is instrumental music, not very popular !
But there are some really good bands, touring a lot, Electro Deluxe, General Electriks and Snarky Puppy are some of them that come to my mind.
Despite an undeniable talent, they are among the few known artists. These three bands, as many others in instrumental music, share a spirit of jazz or jazz-fusion (which I really like).
After listening to the songs of my album, it seems clear to me that I am not in this music style.

Maybe I could, like many other artists, do some covers. This is something that seems to work well to reach an audience, so that some record companies prefer to ask an artist to do covers and see how the audience is interested before posting originals.
Again, the music style is a problem. It would be easy to do covers of soundtracks from tv series, movies, or video games, but chances are that the affected public won't be really interested in the album, as it's different from that music.
Elodie Frege, a french singer, recently complained that she is too often invited to sing covers in a tv show, while she has her own album and songs to sing, but no one seems interested to have her sing her songs on tv or radio.
Ally Rhodes, a singer I discovered on youtube, recently announced that she will stop posting "fillers", as they take time, and despite of the audience she could reach with these videos, time spent on those is time that she doesn't spend on other projects she has.

Today, the original projects are rare. In France, record companies bring back old artists like Goldman to date, the release some "new" cover albums, professionals in music industry don't really take risks, they recycle (that said, it is the same thing in movies ...). And they dare to say that there is a music crisis.
Obviously, there is a crisis, but maybe there should be more artists in the musical landscape. This is an area which is, like many others, governed by the law of supply and demand.
There is a lot of supply.
Everyone has music tastes, so there is a lot of demands too !

The problem is that there are too many people who decide of the supply, and then create the demand. That sounds complicated, but actually it is very simple: they just choose from all the artists they could know (who all have an audience, obviously) the less ugly (very important, as the looks is really important), then build him a custom universe, and promote it. With the promotion, advertisings on tv, radio... they sell everything, but other artists are still looking for their audience.
I remember to have one of my piano student upset when I told her she chose a really bad song (a song from a musical). I then had to apologize and explain.
Obviously, I was sure that she liked the song, because it was made for her. Easy lyrics, nice melody and four effective chords, television commercials, radio diffusions ... that was enough. I'm not saying that the people who created this song have no talent, but the result is more a commercial music product than a song. It was only created to make money from it.
We could ask ourselves if our musical tastes are then really personal ...

Considering that, there are people who say that these are the rules, that's the way the music industry goees, and that you only have to do with it, and there are others.
I am one of the others.

Why I decided to make my album?
  • First, because I have the technical and financial resources to produce it. I organize my work in order to make this album in my spare time.
  • Then, because I want it.
  • Finally, because I am one of those artists who make the music sincerely, and not for commercial purposes. I do the music that I want to do, making it sounds like I want it to sound, and no one tells me how to do it. And some people will like it. Not everyone, because it's a matter of taste, but every music has its audience, the harder thing is to find it.
Maybe I'll do like some other artists I played with, forced to find a "real" job, or who have moved to other countries where music is more important than in France, but I won't regret to do what I want.

This blog is mine, and you are free to comment this point of view!

And if you have any ideas on how to find an audience without any record company... I'm interested ...

Next week, I talk about inspiration!

The album - Episode 2 - Actual status

Hello!

I started writing this album about 2 years ago, and now that I announced this album, it would be nice to speak about his current status.

  • The band:
There will be: 1 violin, 1 viola, 1 cello, keyboards, bass and drums. I will then add a singer.
I will personally play keyboards, bass and drums. For the other musicians, I know who I'll ask to play on this album, but since it's not finished yet, I didn't call anyone.
The challenge is the singer. Again, I know who I want, I'am writing the lyrics and melodies for her voice, but we don't know each other and she is not French ... I hope she will accept ... stay tuned.

  • Style:
It will be almost entirely instrumental music, a mix of film music and other rhythmics rather "groovy". Did I say that there will be a singer ?
Yes, I like instrumental music, and I also like voices. In a standard  "pop"  song, when the chorus comes, everyone usually add more instruments. I do the same thing, but adding vocals. There will be songs where the vocals will only appear on the chorus.

  • The different steps in the creation of this album:
Writing : This is the actual step where I am. I compose the strings melody, some battery loops, bass riffs, the piano parts ... Currently, there are eight songs composed and 6 others in progress.

Pre-production : this is when I start to do some definitive parts, starting with the drums, bass, and keyboards parts.
This is also the step where I will give this album a "color" (I already know what to do, but as it takes a little time, I don't do it during the writing step). This is also the moment to write the lyrics of some songs. At the end of that step, I'll have the structure of every songs.

Production : Once the keyboards, bass and drums parts are recorded, this will be the time when to record vocals and strings. Then there will be mixing, mastering, and everything will be ready for you to hear it !

  • The release date of the album:
It totally depends on the work that I have outside of this album. I plan to release it at the end of the year, probably in october.

  • Financing the album :
It will be completely self-produced. I will not ask money to anyone for the production of this album.
However, I will surely create a project on a crowd funding platform to raise money for a concert and celebrate the release of the album.

That's the current status of the album.

See you next week for more!

Sandrine Gameiro - The 2nd album on My Major Company

Hello!

Today is the official release of one other important project to me: the second album of Sandrine Gameiro , which I co-produce with Sandrine Gameiro and Frédéric Turyan .

I met Sandrine in high school, on stage. We were a part of a jazz course organized by my music teacher.
Then I lost sight of her, and we met again when she was in the audience during a concert I played with Jaoara.
She had just finished his first album, and a few days later she called me and asked me to be part of the live team !
We played this album on stage for 3 years, then Sandrine wanted to move on, and began to write her texts.
She then had the idea of making a new album.

She first asked me to compose on her lyrics. I accepted, but unfortunately, I must not really inspired when it comes to write music on lyrics. You may know it or not, but I'm used to compose music for movies, videos or pictures, and the process is quite different.
For a concert in 2012, I called Frederic Turyan, a guitarist with whom I had played, to accompany Sandrine with me. Frederic loved the project, and a few weeks later, he began to compose music for Sandrine's lyrics. He is himself a songwriter, and writing music on lyrics is much easier for him.

That was the beginning of our collaboration on this new album.
Overall, this album will be the music composed by Frederic, the lyrics by Sandrine. There is still a song that I composed the music for.
Frederic and I do arrangements.
Thus, the extracts you can hear on My Major Company are the results of our collaboration.
It is the voice of Sandrine, Fred's guitars, I play the bass and keyboards, and Fred and I played percussions and some back vocals.

This album is important to me because of the collaboration with these two friends, and then because I love Sandrine's artistic universe.
You can discover it, and don't hesitate to invest, so that we will be able to make this album in optimum conditions.

Bye !

The album - Episode 1 - Origins

Hi everyone!

I saw a lot blogs started, then not updated regularly.
For this blog, let's schedule an update every week. I choose Saturday.
According to other works I have, I may post other articles during the week, but there will always be something on Saturdays.

That post is to talk about my upcoming album.

First things first ! When you play music, and begin to improvise, there is a point when composing music comes naturally. I didn't start composing yesterday, so why do I plan an album now?

Firstly, because I did not know where to go, musically speaking. I do not write lyrics (that said, a lot of commercial success are not bothered with that), and the music I compose is instrumental, so I didn't think to make an album of instrumental music would be interesting (for me as for people who might listen to it).
And then I changed my mind after a concert.

This concert took place May 27, 2012, the concert for The Visitor from the Future , a series of François Descraques (Frenchnerd) for which I am the composer.
For this concert, I had created a special band to play my songs live, the VDF Orchestra. The instruments in this orchestra were:
1 Violin
1 Viola
1 Cello
1 Keyboard
2 Guitars
1 Bass
1 Drums
This band played only once, for this concert.

Here are the things I liked about this concert:

- First of all, I loved this band, both orchestral and capable of the power of a rock band

- I loved the new arrangements I made for the songs.

After this concert, I was disappointed that this band only played once, and I started to compose songs for the VDF Orchestra. This is where I started to think that this specific style, a mix of film music and modern music, sometimes rock, sometimes funk, was interesting. This very specific style, I could see it on my album.

It was in 2012, and of course, things have changed since then, and I will tell you how in the next posts about the album, but the album I'm actually working on is that one I started after this concert ...

See you next Saturday for the rest of the story of this album.

Let's begin

Hello everyone !
This is the translation of my french blog, that's a mix of google translation and my personal corrections.

Today, I start this blog about music and me. I thought about it for some time, and here's why I start today:

- First, I want to share my activities. I am a musician, composer and sound engineer ... so many professions that fascinate me, and I will talk about in more detail.

- Secondly and most importantly: I have super nice projects coming and I want to share them with you, the most important for me is: I'm writing my album. I will tell you about in the coming days, but since I'm actually composing it, you will be able to follow all the steps of its creation.
Well, this article is only the beginning, I hope you will enjoy reading all these adventures ...
